One District, One Industry

Dear Sifer,

SIFE representatives from the universities all over Malaysia were called for a one day meeting by SIFE Malaysia on the 20th November 2008 that took place at Bangunan MARA. The meeting was about SIFE Malaysia Community Enterprise/SDSI Grant Program Under The Flagship of "One District, One Industry". The program is a collaboration between SIFEMalaysia and Ministry of Entrepreneur & Cooperative Development.

"One District, One Industry" is a new project by SIFE Malaysia in the form of competition between all university SIFEs in Malaysia where the winning team will be representing SIFE Malaysia in SIFE World Cup. It is a long term project that is hoped to be SIFE Malaysia's "secret weapon" against SIFEs from other countries in the SIFE World Cup. This long term project consists of 3 phases that will take a maximum of 30 months or 2 1/2 years time.

The main objective of the program is to promote the concept and practices of "social entrepreneurship" within the community. Furthermore, SIFE students are expected to be further engaged with community to help them understand entrepreneurship, involve in business start-ups and sustain their enterprises. This program is also to design and implement a more comprehensive and sustainable entrepreneurial outreach project and maximise result. Lastly, this project aims to create more entrepreneurs and more economic opportunities for the community.

SIFE members are to act as mentors or consultants to the community to teach them the concept of entrepreneurship. It is a heavy responsibility for SIFE members to be consultants to the community as they need to teach them everything including how and to whom they can ask for loans. Furthermore, even choosing the right machinery needed for the industry chosen might be one of the responsibilities of SIFE members. However, we need to think positively because this is a very good opportunity for SIFE members to apply what they have learned in lectures and to gain valuable hands-on experiences that will surely be useful in the near future and to be competitive in the globalised world.
